Advancing Patient Engagement through Coalition Partnerships: A NCPIE Case Study - N. Lee Rucker, MSPH, NCPIE Senior Advisor, presented at the 2nd Annual Optimizing Patient Adherence Conference in Raleigh, NC. The misuse and abuse of prescription medicines and poor understanding of the important balance of medication risks and benefits creates an opportunity for pharmaceutical companies to engage in partnerships with organizations like the National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE) and to collaborate in the strategic development, implementation and assessment of key medicine safe use messages while engaging with a coalition of diverse stakeholder groups representing consumers, patients, caregivers, voluntary health organizations, healthcare providers, including prescribers and pharmacists. NCPIE’s singular focus – for over three decades – continues to be stimulating and improving communication about the safe and appropriate use of medicines to consumers and healthcare professionals through the development of relevant educational resources to achieve intended outcomes and improve public health. The presentation includes examples of recent partnerships with pharmaceutical companies demonstrating the power of collaboration to address prescription drug abuse prevention, medication adherence improvement and patient empowerment.
