PROTECT & PROTECT–Rx Initiative Meetings
Ray Bullman , NCPIE Executive Vice President, represented NCPIE at the 4th Annual Meeting of PROTECT – Preventing Overdoses and Treatment Errors in Children Taskforce, ant the inaugural PROTECT-Rx Initiative meeting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA. The purpose of these meetings was to convene national leaders from industry, academia, professional organizations, and health agencies to continue to implement strategies to prevent unintentional overdoses of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications in children. The PROTECT-Rx initiative is a joint effort of the FDA Safe Use Initiative (www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm187806.htm) and CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. The purpose of the PROTECT-Rx initiative is to apply strategies and experience developed for the (OTC) PROTECT Initiative to the prevention of prescription medication overdoses in children. The work of the PROTECT & PROTECT-Rx Initiatives support the Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2020 objective to reduce emergency department visits for medication overdoses in children.
