Buying Meds Online? Counterfeit Drugs Endanger Americans

Among the dangerous ingredients contained in some counterfeit medications, investigators have discovered heavy metals like mercury, poisons such as antifreeze, as well as incorrect drug ingredients, reports an article in Time. While actual rates of contamination in counterfeit medications can be difficult to measure, the article cites a World Health Organization report that found approximately 73% of counterfeit medications either contained the wrong ingredient, the wrong dosage, or no active ingredient at all. Only 15% had the correct dose and the right ingredient. Consumers should also beware of any “unaccredited website that offers pills at rock-bottom prices,” states Time.
