CDC Finds Big Discrepancies in States' Opioid Prescribing Rates

The rate of opioid prescriptions vary greatly from state to state, with prescribers in the state with the highest rate writing three times as many painkiller scripts as those in the state with the lowest rate, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Overall, CDC researchers reported that 259 million opioid prescriptions were written in 2012, and about 46 people die each day as a result of opioid overdoses.
