CDC Study - Nation’s Antibiotic Overuse

Prescribers in the US are prescribing enough antibiotics to give them to 4 out of 5 Americans every year, a pace that suggests they are being overused, according to a government analysis published in the April 11, 2013 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers at the Centers for Disease control and Prevention analyzed a national prescription drug database for 2010 and found that Americans were prescribed 258 million courses of antibiotics in 2010, for a population just shy of 309 million – equal to an average of 833 antibiotic prescriptions for every 1,000 people.
