PROTECT INITIATIVE – Progress Toward mL-only Dosing for Oral Liquid Medications

In the past few months there has been a tremendous amount of progress towards ‘universal’ support for mL-only dosing for oral liquid medications. In November 2014, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association voluntary guideline was updated to specify mL as the standard unit for oral liquid OTC medicines for children. More recently, AAP released a policy statement that recommends exclusive metric dosing for oral liquid medications (on prescriptions, labels, and dosing devices). Also, a Proposed Rule for the 2015 EHR certification standards has been posted for public comment and includes a proposal to adopt a metric-only standard for e-prescribing systems. Comments are due by May 29, 2015 and can be submitted online.
