Safe Use of Acetaminophen – FDA Resources for Action

The FDA is providing educational messaging to extend the reach of its Safe Use of Acetaminophen campaign to educate the public on the proper use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and to warn that taking too much acetaminophen can be dangerous. The campaign website offers resources for consumers, health professionals, organizations, and campaign supporters on improving consumer safety.

Acetaminophen is an active ingredient found in hundreds of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medicines that are used to relieve pain and fever. It is also combined with other active ingredients in medicines that treat allergy, cough, colds, flu, and sleeplessness. In prescription medicines, acetaminophen is found with other active ingredients to treat moderate to severe pain. Using two or more medicines that contain acetaminophen or using more acetaminophen than directed can cause serious liver damage.
