USP Prescription Container Labeling Standards Promote Safe Medicine Use

The US Pharmacopeial Convention (USP), a member of the NCPIE board of directors, has posted USP’s General Chapter <17>. This important standard is set for publication in November, but USP has created a special pre-publication web page to help disseminate the chapter broadly. The standard is particularly important to patients – and provides for the first time a universal approach to the format, appearance, content, and language of prescription medications dispensed by a pharmacy. The standard provides specific direction to pharmacists and prescribers on how prescription labels should be organized in a “patient-centered” manner. On the web page viewers will find background on the chapter, the recent press release, sample labels, a video of the Expert Committee chair responsible for the chapter discussing why the standard is so important, and a place for downloading the chapter.
