BeMedWise.org is part of a broad-based public education campaign that was established in January 2002 by the National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE) to promote safe and appropriate use of over-the-counter medicines. The newest phase of the campaign features the Be MedWise Prescription for Taking OTC Medicines, issued by Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H to encourage consumers to ask their pharmacist or doctor about the selection and appropriate use of OTC medicines. The Surgeon General's "OTC prescription" will be the centerpiece of a pharmacy-based education campaign that reaches consumers when they are thinking about nonprescription medicines and making their purchasing decisions.
